開催趣旨:

The impacts of climate change are already beginning to emerge and extreme events become more severe and frequent in all regions of the world. In a recently published report, the IPCC AR6 WG1 has highlighted that heavy precipitation will increase over much of Asia and sea levels will continue to rise. In order to implement climate change adaptations against such extreme events, regional projections and detailed impact assessments are essential. Many countries have attempted to produce such fundamental nation-level climate change projections, based typically on large, nation-wide research projects. Scientific knowledge obtained from such projects is then shared with policymakers for adaptation practices. While many countries face similar challenges, knowledge from these impact assessments and adaptation measures has been shared less among Asian countries than compared with global-scale climate change research.

Thus, the “International Workshop on Adaptation Research for Climate Change in Asia (ARCC2021)” will be an opportunity to share knowledge, perceptions, and thoughts acquired during large-scale research projects focusing on climate change adaptation for East Asian countries, particularly those of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, which share similar climatic conditions. In addition, we will share examples of regional climate change projections, impact assessments, and adaptation studies, including those of Southeast Asia.

A similar international conference was held at AOGS 2018 in Hawaii as a special session on risk assessment and adaptation to water-related disasters and water resources. We will share research that has made significant progress since then, including on actual applications of research results and knowledge to societies. In addition, we will report on the latest results of inter-community collaborations of climate change prediction, downscaling, and adaptation research, as well as implementations of the project results, which are only achievable through large-scale research projects. Through this workshop, we aim to issue a joint declaration on climate change adaptation by the participating groups and their respective countries to the larger research community and general public.
